It is a great time to learn how to operate your radio gear away from home and in some cases, in less than optimal conditions. The objective of Field Day is to work as many stations as possible on all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands). This is a great opportunity to promote amateur radio in the community.įor many clubs, ARRL Field Day is always highlighted on their annual calendar. Points are earned for having a GOTA station and the number of contacts made. An operator is with them explaining what they need to do and what is the exchange. A GOTA station is used for people who don’t have an amateur license and would like to get on the air and try out ham radio. One of the community outreach areas that a number of groups do is Get On the Air or GOTA. Field Day is about practicing for emergencies, training other amateur radio operators, community outreach and, most of all, having FUN!

On the fourth weekend of June of each year is the time ARRL Field Day is held, more than 40,000 radio amateurs gather get together with their clubs, groups or individually in public places to help people see how ham radio works and can be a help their community during a disaster. Field Day is a 24-hour event so amateur operators are on the air all during the night.Įach year ARRL will decide the theme for Field Day and will make apparel and other items to purchase for that year’s theme.ĪRRL Field Day was started in 1933 and is the most popular ham radio event of the year. They usually have lots of food and of course have lots of fun. Ham radio operators get together as clubs or as groups or even individuals and find a place to setup their stations and camp overnight. This is the annual gala ham radio event of the year. This usually means you will need to have emergency power and usually need to take your ham radio equipment out into the field. The purpose of ARRL Field Day is to practice amateur radio operation under emergency conditions. Sure, you can do Field Day at home but that is not the purpose.
